Meeting with President Josipović on the occasion of signing the Convention

Today, on January 30, 2012 Maja Mamula, Rada Borić, Branka Žigante Živković and Gordana Sobol met with the Croatian President Mr. Josipović on the occasion of the signing of the Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence by the Republic Croatia. Initiative to support the signing of the Convention was started a Dubravka Šimonović, Ph.D., former Co-Chairman of the Committee of CAHVIO who prepared the Convention and a member of the UN CEDAW Committee, and Maja Mamula, Coordinator of the Women’s Room.

In April 2011, the Council of Europe adopted the Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence, and on May 11, 2011 in Istanbul, it was opened for signing. To this date, it has been signed by 17 countries, but not Croatia.

The Convention, as a first binding European instrument creates a comprehensive legal framework for the prevention of violence, protection of victims and punishment of perpetrators, and envisages the establishment of the group of international experts, which will monitor the implementation of the Convention at the national level.

President Josipović expressed his support for signing and ratification of this Convention.
